  • CHAPTER HISTORY

From 2000-2009, Shelby County remained as the fastest growing county in the State of Alabama over the past decade in terms of % growth. Though the growth brought an influx of businesses and families, there was a low/no presence of African-American male role models and a lack of diverse leaders in the education systems and outreach programs for children of color. Wanting a provide a solution to their community, the history of Alabaster-Pelham Alumni Chapter begins by referencing and honoring the eight (8) brothers that worked tirelessly and built the foundation of what became the first alumni chapter in Shelby County. In 2009, these eight brothers (Richard Broady, Dwight Coleman, Leon Johnson, Courtney Lassiter, Stan Lewis, Maurice Mercer, Marshall Thomas, and Dr. Charles Woods) shared a common vision and worked synchronously to ensure all qualifications were met to obtain a charter.

The Grand Board of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. unanimously granted approval for chartering on January 8, 2010, during the National Founders Day celebration in Miami, Florida. The motion to grant a charter to the Brothers of Alabaster-Pelham Alumni Association was made by Senior Grand Vice Polemarch Randy Bates on behalf of Province Polemarch Ronald Range during the Grand Board Meeting. The chartering ceremony for Alabaster-Pelham Alumni Association took place on February 20, 2010, at 5pm at First Baptist Church Pelham. Twenty-two brothers are listed on the Scroll as charter members. After maintaining high standards and meeting all qualifications, Alabaster-Pelham Alumni Association became a fully chartered chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. on March 28, 2011.

The newly chartered Brothers of Alabaster-Pelham Alumni Chapter infiltrated Shelby County and answered their community's call by assisting single moms, creating Kappa League programs, participating in high school career days, establishing tutoring programs, and providing scholarships to deserving students. As a result of their efforts, the Alabaster-Pelham Alumni Chapter is a two-time recipient of the Southern Province Small Alumni Chapter of the Year (2011, 2012) and a one-time recipient of the Southern Province Medium Size Alumni Chapter of the Year (2013).

The chapter’s focus is to embody the interests of the fraternity and demonstrate its ability to lead others in the greater Shelby County community we embrace. Through our national service programs, leadership development and personal achievements, we shall continue to uphold our Fraternity’s grand purpose.
